Don and Lillian Stokes

The hosts and creators of Stokes Birds At Home are Don and Lillian Stokes, America's most popular bird authorities, who share their love of birds and birdwatching on this 13-part national public television series, which begins its Second Season January-Spring 2001 and now consists of 26 episodes. Joining them as show mascot and avid outdoors-dog is Daisy their pet Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

Don and Lillian Stokes are the nation's most prominent and widely respected authorities on birds and have been called America's "first couple" of birding. They have produced 27 books on birds and nature, including such bestsellers as Stokes Field Guide to Birds, Stokes Beginner's Guide to Birds, Stokes Birdfeeder Book, Stokes Hummingbird Book, and Stokes Bird Gardening Book. To date more than four million copies of their books have been sold. They have also produced the bird song CDs and cassettes, Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs: Eastern Region, with Lang Elliot, and Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs: Western Region, with Kevin Colver.

Popular lecturers, Don and Lillian can often be found winging their way across the country to birding festivals and events where they give keynote presentations. For 20 years, the Stokes have been teaching people about birds and nature and have written for all of the major nature publications. In addition to their writing, they are active bird photographers and videographers and members of numerous bird clubs and ornithological organizations.

Their mutual love of birds is what brought them together in the first place. Both were introduced to nature as children and that attachment blossomed as adults. Don began a career as a nature writer. Lillian studied raptors and was an avid hawk watcher before she met Don. Fortuitously, Lillian decided to enroll in a class on bird behavior at Massachusetts Audubon Society. The instructor turned out to be Don Stokes. The rest is history.

Don and Lillian have expanded their endeavors to include a television career. They were the creators, coproducers and hosts of the very first birdwatching series on public television called BirdWatch with Don and Lillian Stokes, which debuted in October, 1997. They have now created a brand new national, weekly, public television series called Stokes Birds At Home, which will bring the world of birds to viewers' homes beginning in winter-spring 2000.

In Massachusetts, where they reside during the summer months, the Stokes have created a ive acre bird sanctuary that has attracted more than 140 bird species, 36 of which have nested there. The remarkable habitat features large perennial gardens, a viewing gazebo, an open meadow with nesting bluebirds and tree swallows, wetlands, and mixed woodlands. It has been featured on "Good Morning America" and written about in numerous publications. Segments in each episode of Stokes Birds At Home have been filmed on their property.

Throughout the winter months the Stokes reside in Florida where they can enjoy an even greater variety of birds, observing them in yet another type of environment.
