Understanding Your Dog's Chewing Behavior

Understanding Your Dog's Chewing Habits

Why are you chewing everything in sight?

  • I'm Lonely (Separation Anxiety)
When their owner leaves for work, many dogs experience separation anxiety and chew to calm their nerves.
  • I'm Teething
From the age of 3 months to about 10 months, puppies are teething and relieve the discomfort by chewing. Chewing is normal behavior for puppies and the best corrective action is to direct the puppy's chewing toward acceptable objects.
  • It's My Nature
Some dogs, such as retrievers, are mouth oriented and need to chew a lot.
  • I'm Bored
Dogs are susceptible to boredom just like their owners. Chewing becomes an outlet for a dog's frustration.
TURNING DESTRUCTIVE CHEWING INTO A HEALTHY BEHAVIOR

  • Positive Reinforcement
Dogs are capable of learning what is and is not acceptable to chew. A treat tucked inside a chew toy gives your dog essential play time, purpose and a reward for a dog's natural chewing instinct.
  • Negative Reinforcement
Surround your dog with several forbidden objects and a chew toy. Pretend to read the newspaper, but keep an eye on your pup. If your pup puts his mouth on one of the forbidden objects, correct him with a firm NO!, and offer chew toy instead. Give plenty of praise.
